Hello Chapel Hill Community,
It’s been a lively couple of weeks in Town! With our Tar Heels back on campus, CHCCS students returning to school, and cooler weather, Chapel Hill is buzzing. As we ease into fall, I’d like to check in with everyone and share a few updates from Town Hall.
Welcoming Our New Town Manager
We’re excited to officially welcome Ted Voorhees as Chapel Hill’s new Town Manager. Ted stepped into the role on August 11. We’re thrilled to have him on board and invite you to meet him at a community welcome reception:

Continuing Our Recovery from Tropical Storm Chantal
Recovery efforts are ongoing in Chapel Hill – with some residents still in temporary housing and businesses working to get up and running again. We continue to be grateful to our staff and everyone who has stepped up to help out.
For those impacted by the storm: The deadline for the state’s Individual Assistance program has been extended to September 12, so there is still time to apply.
For those wanting to help local residents: The Orange County Community Giving Fund has raised $83,400 to help with recovery, but there is still a great deal of need in our community – especially as families who lost everything move back into their empty homes and get ready for cooler weather.
To help our local businesses: Supporting local businesses—whether by visiting, ordering takeout, or buying gift cards—can make a meaningful impact and help speed their recovery.
Enhancing Safety on Franklin Street
As part of our ongoing commitment to community policing, the Town has opened a new Police Substation in the Post Office building on the 100 block of Franklin Street. The substation will be open during daytime and early evening hours — just look for the sign out front.
Whether you need to file a report, ask a question, or simply want to get to know the officers who serve our town, this substation offers a welcoming, walk-in environment where those conversations can happen. It’s about making safety services more prominent and accessible to our downtown community and guests.
Celebrating An Affordable Housing Win
We’re proud to share that DHIC, Inc., an affordable housing developer, has been awarded 2025 9% Low-Income Housing Tax Credits for Maddry Meadows, a new apartment community planned for Homestead Road. This development is expected to add 53 affordable units for senior households to Chapel Hill when the project is projected to open in early 2028.
Getting down to fall business
Council will hold our first regular meeting on Wednesday, September 10th at 6 p.m. in Council Chamber. Meetings are open to the public. You can check out the agenda and materials on-line in advance of the meeting.
