OBITUARIES
Anne Craig Barnes, age 91, of Chapel Hill passed away on May 8, 2023. Anne was born March 29, 1932, in Gaston County, NC and was predeceased by her husband Billy Barnes, Sr, parents George H. Craig and Jessie T. Craig and two sisters Christine C. McConnell and Bette C. Moore. She is survived by daughter Betsy Barnes, son Billy Barnes, Jr. and his wife Diane, three granddaughters- Jessica Farrow and her husband Reginald Farrow, Jennifer Watson and Kathleen Barnes as well as nieces, nephews and cousins.
Anne was a devoted mother, grandmother and friend to all. Her interests ranged from dance and ballet instruction to calligraphy and shell collecting. She was an active member of the Binkley Baptist Church in Chapel Hill for many years. Anne was also a distinguished and respected public servant having served Chatham and Orange counties in the NC House of Representatives for 15 years prior to retiring in 1996. She made her mark as a hard working, shrewd and effective lady legislator in an assembly dominated by men at the time. After retirement she continued to serve on state and community commissions and advisory boards.
A celebration of life is scheduled on Sunday, June 4, 2023, 3PM at Binkley Baptist Church, 1712 Willow Drive in Chapel Hill. Condolences may be shared at CremationSocietyNC.com
