Dr. Anne E. Moughon, age 89, passed away on May 3, 2023 in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Dr. Moughon lived in Atlanta from 1970 until 2000, when she moved to Chapel Hill, North Carolina. She earned a Bachelor’s degree at the University of Tulsa, a Master’s degree in Education at Harvard University, and a Ph.D. in foreign language education at Ohio State University. She taught in the Caddo Parish, Louisiana schools from 1957 until 1962. She also taught at Tulane University and at Emory University. Anne worked for more than 20 years as an education specialist in the Georgia Department of Education.
In 2002, Anne married William J. (Bill) Smither. She spent five happy years with him until he passed away, with Anne by his side, in 2007.
Anne is survived by her nephew and niece, Stewart Moughon and Caitlin Beaumont of Seattle, Washington; her brother, Tom S. Moughon, Jr. of Supply, North Carolina; and Mary Catherine Smither Norr of Glenville, New York and William Chris Smither of Arlington, Massachusetts, Bill Smither’s children.
Anne’s family is deeply grateful to all of the caregivers at Carol Woods who provided her with excellent and compassionate care throughout her time there, and particularly in her final months.
