Following the Thanksgiving holiday break, area men’s and women’s basketball teams from Chapel Hill, East Chapel Hill, and Carrboro High Schools returned to the court this week. In addition, area wrestling programs returned to the mat with a series of dual team matches and individual tournaments.
CHAPEL HILL — Chapel Hill, East Chapel Hill and Carrboro met Nov. 20 at the Homestead Aquatic Center for their annual “Paws in the Pool” tri-meet, a feline-themed rivalry event featuring the Tigers, Wildcats and Jaguars. The early-season competition brought strong performances across the board.
CHAPEL HILL –As Chapel Hill High School’s men’s and women’s track teams look ahead to the upcoming winter indoor track season and the spring outdoor track season, the Tigers participated in a couple of high-profile events during November, prior to the Thanksgiving break.
While Chapel Hill’s men’s soccer team came up just short in its quest to bring a NCHSAA 7A state championship home, men’s and women’s basketball kicked off for local programs. Each of the local high schools played their respective season openers in the days leading up the Thanksgiving holiday break.

CHAPEL HILL/CARRBORO – This weekend, the North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA) will host its men’s soccer state championship matches across eight different classifications.
November means the postseason for fall sports, as the state playoffs for football and men’s soccer have swung into high gear in recent days. While local programs are no longer in the mix in the NCHSAA football state playoffs, each of the area’s local high schools remained in the mix in the NCHSAA men’s soccer state playoffs heading into this week.
The fall women’s tennis season recently concluded for prep programs across the state of North Carolina, and two programs from the local area – Carrboro and East Chapel Hill – proved to be among the state’s elite.

Multiple area women’s tennis players have earned individual NCHSAA state championships in recent days, as Carrboro’s Ryan Hanes became the 4A state champion in a victory over her Carrboro teammate Morgan Stowe, while East Chapel Hill star Samantha Benton went all the way and prevailed in the NCHSAA 6A state championship tournament.
Saturday was a big day for area cross country programs, as Carrboro and East Chapel Hill both won men’s and women’s Regional championships. Carrboro’s men’s and women’s team won NCHSAA 4A East Regional titles, while East Chapel Hill’s men’s and women’s teams came out first in the NCHSAA 6A Central Regional.
Playoff season has arrived for local sports, as area volleyball and women’s tennis teams have already advanced in this year’s NCHSAA state playoffs. The regular seasons are also winding down in the sports of soccer and football, as Chapel Hill, East Chapel Hill, and Carrboro all make late pushes for conference honors and postseason seeding.
Men’s and women’s cross country teams representing Chapel Hill High, East Chapel Hill High, and Carrboro High competed in various conference championship meets earlier this week. The Jaguars competed at the Big Seven Conference championships October 15 in Durham, while the Wildcats and Tigers also competed October 15 at the Tobacco Road Conference championship meet in Hillsborough.
