Chatham County Sheriff’s Office Urges Public to Stay Off Jordan Lake Amid Hazardous Conditions

PITTSBORO, N.C. — The Chatham County Sheriff’s Office is urging the public to avoid Jordan Lake as high water levels and dangerous conditions persist in the aftermath of Tropical Storm Chantal.

Recent storms have raised lake levels significantly, leading to strong currents, unpredictable depths, and widespread floating debris. These conditions pose serious risks to both swimmers and boaters.

“This summer has been especially tragic on Jordan Lake,” said Sheriff Mike Roberson. “Since mid-June, four people have drowned. These are painful reminders that conditions on the water can turn deadly in an instant. We’re asking everyone to make safety the top priority and, for now, to stay off the lake.”

The Sheriff’s Office emphasizes the following safety guidelines:

• Avoid entering the water or boating until conditions improve.
• Always wear a properly fitted life jacket when on or near the water.
• Only swim in designated swimming areas, where life jacket loaner stations are available.
• Be aware of floating debris, submerged hazards, and swift currents, all of which can be deadly.

Officials continue to monitor conditions in coordination with partner agencies.

“Our priority is protecting lives,” Roberson added. “We’re asking for the community’s help by respecting warnings and avoiding unnecessary risk.”

Access points around the lake, including Farrington Point Boat Ramp, remain closed due to flooding and unsafe conditions. A photo taken Tuesday, July 15, shows large logs and debris scattered across the parking lot at the ramp.
