Dunkin’ Donuts shooting suspect is charged in shooting co-worker by CHPD

Charges have been filed in a shooting that took place in the 1500 block of East Franklin Street on Friday, Jan. 26 at 2:47 p.m. The victim and the shooter are reported to be employees at Dunkin’ Donuts. According to the Chapel Hill police information the victim was taken to UNC Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The person who was detained at the scene has been identified as Wesley Shamar Higgins, 23, of Chapel Hill. Higgins was arrested and charged with the following:

  • Assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, inflicting serious injury
  • Assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill
  • Discharge weapon into occupied property
  • Discharge firearm in city limits
  • Assault by pointing a gun (two counts)

Higgins is being held at the Orange County Detention Center under a $100,000 bond. His first appearance in court is scheduled for Monday at 2 pm.

The victim has been treated and released from the hospital. No additional information is available at this time.
