Earth Day Food Footprint Food Sale

April 22, 2021 @ 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm

Free

Join us on Earth Day, Thursday, April 22, and enjoy tasty food with a beneficial message for Mother Earth. Climate Reality Orange County Chapter is partnering with the Town of Carrboro and Present Day on Main to offer delicious vegan and vegetarian cuisine, from 5-7:30 pm. Celebrate the day with us at the Carrboro Town Commons on Main Street, where the Farmers Market is held.

Climate Reality Project Orange County, NC Chapter (CROCC) was started in 2019 and is active locally in a variety of climate initiatives. Members have worked with Carrboro Council member Randee Haven-O’Donnell, also a CROCC member, the Carrboro Environmental Planner Laura Janway, and the Carrboro Environmental Advisory Board, on a Food Footprint education outreach module that aligns with the Carrboro Community Climate Action Plan called the Food Footprint.

The Earth Day Food Footprint Food Sale is being organized to launch engagement in the Carrboro Community Climate Action Plan: Food Measures component of the plan. Reducing consumption of meat products, and especially meat products associated with Concentrated Animal Food Operations (CAFOs), helps lower consumer greenhouse gas emissions created in raising, processing and transporting animal products.

At the food sale, CROCC hopes to show that cutting back on meat consumption frequency and portion sizes is a painless choice. According to Project Drawdown, plant-rich diets not only reduce emissions, they are healthier, leading to lower rates of chronic disease.  It was reported in a 2016 study that business-as-usual emissions could be reduced by as much as 70 percent through adopting a vegan diet and 63 percent for a vegetarian diet, which includes cheese, milk, and eggs. A plant-rich diet can include some meat, for those who just can’t give it up, while being footprint conscious.

In early 2020, plans were being made for the 50th anniversary of Earth Day.  These plans were mostly put on hold due to the worsening pandemic. This Earth Day, we will celebrate in a safe manner, outside with masks and social distancing. See you at the Carrboro Town Commons for The Earth Day Food Footprint Food Sale!!!!

The Climate Reality Project was started in 2006 by former Vice President Al Gore to educate and mobilize climate activists around the world, providing the skills and resources to push for aggressive climate action and high-level policies that accelerate a just transition to clean energy.
