The League of Women Voters of Orange, Durham and Chatham Counties is sponsoring the next event in the series “Let’s Talk Civics”. On Wednesday, May 11 from 5:30 – 7 pm, learn how regional transportation decisions are made and how you as a citizen can get involved. Aaron Cain will begin the online program by describing the structure and function of Metropolitan Planning Organizations (MPOs) and why their decisions are so important in shaping our future. Mr. Cain is the Planning Manager for the Durham-Chapel Hill-Carrboro MPO, responsible for transportation planning for the western part of the Research Triangle, including Northeast Chatham County.
Following Mr. Cain’s presentation, we will have a robust discussion with three local elected officials – Hillsborough Mayor Jenn Weaver, current MPO Chair; Chatham County Commission Chair Karen Howard, MPO Vice-Chair; and Durham County Commission Vice-Chair Wendy Jacobs, past MPO Chair. They will discuss the role of the MPO in transportation decision making, past and current major projects, challenges with funding, and ways that citizens can more effectively participate in decisions. There will be time for your questions and comments.
