Final Two Sheep from Chicken Bridge Road Sold at Public Auction

ORANGE COUNTY – A loose flock of sheep that kept Chatham Sheriff’s Animal Resource Center (ARC) staff busy this summer is now fully rehomed after the last two animals were sold in a public auction on Tuesday.

The unusual situation began in June when deputies and ARC staff responded to calls about loose sheep roaming through woods near Chicken Bridge Road. Using trail cameras, community tips, and daily search efforts, ARC staff captured 12 sheep over several weeks. Despite public notices and outreach, no owner came forward.

Eight sheep were sold at the first public auction in July, which drew strong local interest and helped offset the cost of housing and caring for the animals. As required by North Carolina law, the surplus from that auction — after expenses, totaling $5,200 — was presented this week to Chatham County Schools.

“It’s rewarding to see the work we do with the animals also helps our schools,” said Chief Deputy Steve Maynor. “This check is a reminder that community-focused efforts can have multiple benefits.”

A second auction for two additional sheep was conducted in August, and the final two animals — who had avoided capture until late summer — were sold Tuesday morning at the ARC. Capt. Stephen Renn, who coordinated the sheep recovery and auction efforts, served as auctioneer. Piedmont Farm Animal Refuge of Pittsboro placed the winning bid on the final two sheep and will provide a permanent home for the pair. The Refuge also adopted several members of the flock during the earlier auction.

With Tuesday’s sale complete, all 12 sheep have now been successfully placed.
