Two violent carjackings, occurring last week and within a mile of each other, have put our community on high alert.
According to the Carrboro Police Department, a man approached a person sitting in a gold 2008 BMW in a parking lot in the 200 block of Roberson St. shortly before 5 p.m. on Wednesday, April 3. The man, unknown to the victim, pulled a gun and stole the car.
The suspect is described as a thin Black man in his late teens or early 20s wearing a ski mask. He fled the scene in the stolen vehicle, heading east on Roberson Street. The car has not been recovered, and police are still searching for the suspect.
Another armed carjacking incident took place at around 12:43 a.m. on Saturday, April 5. The Chapel Hill Police Department responded to a carjacking report in the 100 block of W. Franklin Street at the Carolina Square parking deck. An initial investigation determined a man stole the Mercedes vehicle at gunpoint. The driver of the car was a UNC student and was not injured. Investigators are working to identify the suspect.
The stolen vehicle was a gray 2017 Mercedes CLA 250 with a North Carolina license plate tag HEV-1901. According to the Chapel Hill Police, the car was later abandoned in Durham.
There were no arrests reported in either case, and police are investigating whether they are related, according to a CBS news report.
