Julia Winchell Lackey, Obituary

OBITUARIES

Julia Winchell Lackey, daughter of Virginia Gasson Winchell and William B. Winchell, died March 16, 2023 in Chapel Hill, NC. She was born June 25, 1926, grew up in Topeka, Kansas, and graduated cum laude from Colorado College in 1947 with a degree in Psychology. Following college she moved to Philadelphia, PA, where she taught kindergarten, and met and married Dr. Robert Stevenson Lackey in 1949. The couple lived in St. Louis, MO, while Bob completed his specialty training in Radiology, spent two years at Langley Field in Virginia, and in 1955 settled in Charlotte where Bob practiced Radiology at Carolinas Medical Center, now Atrium Health, and became the founding president of the Charlotte Radiological Group. After retirement the couple moved to Chapel Hill to be closer to their family.

Julia was a former President of the Mecklenburg Medical Auxiliary of the Mecklenburg County Medical Society (now Healthy Charlotte Alliance). She was also a member of the Medical Auxiliary and Endowment Committee which was instrumental in the founding of Hospitality House of Charlotte, known then as MMAE’s Inn, a home-away-from-home for out-of-town families of medical patients. She served as the first president of the Hospitality House Auxiliary as well. She was active in the local public schools, serving as President of the Parent Teacher Associations of the Elementary, Junior High, and High Schools attended by her children.

She was a founding member of the Radiettes, a group of the spouses of the physician members of the Charlotte Radiological Group. She and Bob were members of Christ Episcopal Church for more than 50 years. Julia enjoyed auditing literature and history courses at Queens University, and was always happy to be near the beach at their home in Pawleys Island, SC.

Julia was predeceased by her husband of 72 years, Bob Lackey, and by her grandson, Lincoln Baugus. She is survived by her children Robin Jacobs (Barry), Susan Lackey, Steve Lackey (Liska), and Bill Lackey (Yvonne), as well as grandchildren and great grandchildren, all of whom miss her greatly.

Remembrances may be made to a charity of your choice. A private family service will be held in Charlotte at a later date.
