On May 12, Julie McClintock was honored by the North Carolina Commission on Volunteerism at a ceremony in the old House Chambers at the State Capitol. She was awarded a 2025 Governor’s Volunteer Service Award Medallion, as one of 21 recipients representing counties across North Carolina. McClintock was nominated as Orange County’s Volunteer of the Year and will receive Orange County’s Key Volunteer Award at a ceremony at Durham Performing Arts Center on June 11.
McClintock was nominated for these two awards for her more than two decades of volunteering with Friends of Bolin Creek, an organization she co-founded in 2003 and currently serves as president. She was inspired to begin this work when Bolin Creek failed to meet EPA and state standards for drinkable and fishable waters and was classified by the EPA as impaired.
In her work with the Friends of Bolin Creek, McClintock has served as liaison to the Towns of Carrboro and Chapel Hill on 319 grants to restore the creek and its watershed; partnered with the NC Department of Environmental Quality and conservation groups to preserve the forested portion of the watershed; and brought together a broad coalition of community members and leaders to foster collaboration for improving the health of Bolin Creek.
If you lived in Chapel Hill before moving to Carolina Meadows, you probably already knew Julie McClintock by name, if not personally, for her many years of volunteering in Chapel Hill. She served for 12 years on the Town Council, two years on the OWASA Board, and was a member of the committee to save the Chelsea Theater, as well as participating in numerous other community endeavors.
Julie and her husband, John Morris, moved to Carolina Meadows in 2023. She has continued her civic involvement since moving to Carolina Meadows by being actively involved in the planning of the nearby Sheffield Farms project and keeping our community apprised of developments, as well as serving on the CMU steering committee.
