This July 4, as the bright burst of fireworks color the skies of this vast and beautiful country, Orange County will be having a different kind of celebration, one rooted not only in America’s past, but in the voices and stories that continue to shape its future.

On Saturday, July 4, community leaders, historians, authors, elected officials, and residents will gather at the historic Colonial Inn in downtown Hillsborough for a sold-out celebration commemorating the nation’s semiquincentennial and unveiling an important new book: A Gathering of Voices: Orange County at 250, by local author and historian Valarie Schwartz.

Hosted by the Chapel Hill/Orange County Visitors Bureau, the event has reached capacity, reflecting the strong community interest in honoring both the nation’s milestone anniversary and Orange County’s unique place within the American story.

The afternoon will feature music, storytelling, historical reflection, and community dialogue—all centered on the idea that America’s story is still being written by ordinary people in communities like Chapel Hill, Carrboro, and Hillsborough. While many communities are celebrating with parades and patriotic ceremonies, Orange County’s observance seeks to highlight a broader narrative—one that acknowledges both the progress and challenges that have shaped the American experience.

Hillsborough Mayor Mark Bell will welcome the gathered, recognizing the importance of Hillsborough as one of North Carolina’s most historic communities and thanking the many residents, contributors, and volunteers who helped make the celebration possible. Hillsborough was a key center for political activity throughout the Revolutionary War, while the Orange County militia actively participated in multiple battles against British forces. The town of Hillsborough itself served as an early meeting point for the North Carolina Provincial Congress.

Carter Minor will serve as master of ceremonies for the July 4, 2026 event at Colonial Inn.

Serving as master of ceremonies will be longtime community leader, educator, musician, and civil rights advocate Carter Minor. Minor’s remarks are expected to focus on themes of justice and community responsibility, drawing connections between the nation’s founding ideals and the ongoing work of building a more inclusive society. His presentation will weave together personal reflections, historical observations, and music that helped define the civil rights era.

Throughout the afternoon, guests will be invited to join in familiar songs including “Let’s Get Together,” “If I Had a Hammer,” “This Land Is Your Land,” “A Change Is Gonna Come,” and “We Shall Overcome.” Organizers hope the music will serve as a bridge between generations and encourage attendees to reflect on both the accomplishments and unfinished work of American democracy.

At the center of the event is the debut of A Gathering of Voices: Orange County at 250. This is a commemorative publication that captures stories from residents whose experiences reflect the county’s rich diversity and evolving identity. Through interviews and historical research, Schwartz documents voices from across Orange County, preserving perspectives that might otherwise be lost to time. Following her remarks, attendees will participate in a community conversation inspired by Quaker traditions, allowing contributors and guests to share reflections and personal stories.

Organizers hope the format will create space for authentic dialogue and remind participants that history is not only found in archives and textbooks, but also in the lived experiences of neighbors and friends.

America 250 Celebration at Colonial Inn on July 4, 2026

Few locations could provide a more fitting backdrop than the Colonial Inn. Originally built in 1838 as the Orange Hotel, the property has welcomed travelers, merchants, public officials, and visitors for nearly two centuries. Following a major restoration completed in 2020, the inn has reemerged as one of downtown Hillsborough’s most celebrated landmarks, blending historic character with modern hospitality.

Today, the Inn stands as a symbol of continuity, resilience, and renewal, qualities that mirror both Orange County’s history and the broader American experience.

As Hillsborough Mayor Mark Bell says, “This event and the entire day represents more than a birthday celebration for the nation. It is an opportunity to recognize the people whose stories, contributions, and aspirations continue to shape the Hillsborough and greater Orange County community.”

As America marks 250 years, Orange County’s celebration offers a reminder that history is not simply something we inherit. It is something we create together—one voice, one story, and one generation at a time.
