Police Share ATM Safety Alert Following Armed Robbery

The Chapel Hill Police Department is asking community members to pay close attention to their surroundings while using ATMs. Investigators are working to identify men who robbed a woman at gunpoint last night.

At 10:24pm, the victim got cash from an ATM at the Bank of America at 851 Willow Drive. About ten minutes later, she arrived home in the area of Old Chapel Hill Road, where three men stole cash and credit cards before leaving the area. There were no reports of injuries.

A preliminary investigation determined the men followed the victim from the bank to her home. Investigators are following leads, and no additional information is available at this time.

Police are sharing the following safety tips with community members:

• Call 911 if you believe someone is following you after you visit an ATM.
• Be aware of your surroundings. If you feel unsafe don’t use the ATM.
• Be careful that no one can see you enter your PIN at the ATM.
