Student Voice: A Shooting Happened Right Outside My School and the Silence is Deafening

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Hello,

My name is Faith West, and I am a student at Carrboro High School, I’m writing to you because I am frustrated and hurting.

Recently, there was a shooting right here outside my school. What’s making it even worse is that it feels like there hasn’t been enough news coverage. To the rest of the world, it might just be another headline, but for us, it was terrifying. I have a history of trauma with gun violence, and having this happen in the place where I’m supposed to be learning, and then seeing the world just move on, is honestly traumatizing.

I am deeply upset with the school board and the district. Their response has been nowhere near enough. We are the ones who have to walk back into that building every day feeling unprotected. I’m pushing for metal detectors and real security because it isn’t fair that we have to live in fear.

I’m already planning to talk to the Mayor and I’ve talked to a NC representative. I’m reaching out to you because our community needs to know the truth about how this is affecting our mental health and why we’re demanding change.

Please don’t let this story disappear. We deserve to be safe, and we deserve to be heard.

Sincerely,

Faith West
