Suspect Sought in Attempted Rape in Carrboro

CARRBORO– The Carrboro Police Department is investigating an attempted rape that occurred on the Frances Shetley Bikeway early this morning (Thursday, Oct. 9, 2025) between the hours of 1 and 2:30 a.m. The Frances Shetley Bikeway is located between N. Greensboro St. and Shelton St. A graphic is attached to this release showing the aerial view of the Bikeway.

The female survivor was attacked while walking her dog. The suspect is described as a black male, approximately 5’6” to 5’10” tall, possibly around 40 years old, with a medium build. He is wearing a gray hoodie and dark pants. The survivor was transported to UNC Hospitals for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. The suspect is not in custody.

As this assault occurred along a well-utilized bikeway in the community, which is proximate to Carrboro Elementary School and numerous residential dwellings, we ask that community members exercise caution and report any suspicious activities they witness. The Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools have been notified of the incident. This case is being actively investigated, and we are asking the public to share any information on this incident.
