WCOM announces its fundraiser Disc Golf Tournament 2024 this Saturday

WCOM, the (103.5) Carrboro radio station, is announcing its annual Disc Golf Tournament, which will be held this Saturday, Sept. 14, starting at 10 a.m. at the Steel String Brewery at Pluck Farm in Mebane, North Carolina.

The Local Reporter is proud to partner with WCOM to promote this event and sponsor a hole. The cost is $20 per player and $50 to sponsor a hole. Vendors such as Alsises Ice Cream and Chirba Dumplings will be present. Kids can enjoy a bounce house, and DJ Jenny Sais Quoi will be in the booth featuring LP Hovercraft.

It is set up like a regular golf course for those unfamiliar with disc golf, but you can use special frisbees or flying discs. Instead of hitting a ball off a tee and aiming to get it in a hole with as few strokes as possible, disc golf involves throwing a disc from the tee and hitting an above-ground target in as few throws as possible.

Chris Amsbury, director of events for WCOM and show host, said, “We are in the process of raising money to move to a new location in the 203 Project in Carrboro, and we need funds to do that.”

Two divisions in the singles tournament start at 10 a.m., and you show up and shoot your best score. There is a casual division and a serious division. “Both divisions will compete for prizes and a trophy,” said Amsbury.

The second half of the tournament is a scramble that begins at 12:30 p.m. This means that you play on a team, and even beginners have a good chance of winning. This is because everyone shoots from the longest shot, similar to “best ball” in golf. “It’s really a lot of fun,” said Amsbury. There is no age limit and no experience is necessary.

WCOM encourages you to sign up in advance at www.wcomfm.org to make scheduling easier, but it is not mandatory.

The local 100-watt station has been broadcasting since 2004 and operates under the umbrella of their parent 501(c)3 non-profit parent organization, Public Gallery of Carrboro.
